(OSH) for the 2024 Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh air show A.K.A. Oshkosh.

“Oshkosh gets bigger and better every year, and we love having the chance to be a part of it,” said Envoy Manager of Air Operations Recruitment calvin lee poker. “Not only is this a weeklong opportunity to see some of the coolest aircraft both up close and in the sky, it’s also a full week of meeting aspiring aviators from all walks of life.”

This annual event turns the small Wisconsin airport into the busiest airport in the country seemingly overnight, with more than 10 thousand different aircraft – from single engine Cessnas to multi-engine military planes – touching down over the course of the event.

When the record 686,000 attendees weren’t looking up to the skies to watch the daily airshows, they were getting their steps in on the event grounds to see all different kinds of aircraft that came in just for the event, chatting with flight schools from across the country and networking with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

“Oshkosh is unique in that it’s not always the same crowd we see at events like the annual National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) and Women in Aviation International (WAI) conferences, where many of those attendees already have a few flight hours logged in commercial jets,” said Kipp. “Coming here gives us an opportunity to meet the next generation of aviators and inspire them on their path to whatever realm of aviation draws them most.”

One week wasn’t enough, we’re already excited to see what next year’s air show brings to the table – here’s to Oshkosh in 2025!

We recently met with 35-year-old Envoy Captain Pete LaVay, who is an avid mountain climber, to learn more about his life at Envoy and on the peaks of the Himalayas.

Flying is a “lifelong passion”

What’s your Envoy story?

I’ve been with Envoy for four and half years, currently serving as a Captain based in Phoenix.

How did you become interested in aviation?

Aviation has been my lifelong passion. Previously, I was a U.S. Army aviator flying UH-60 Blackhawks for 11 years. Transitioning to Envoy, I utilized the Envoy Rotary Transition Program to acquire my fixed-wing ratings.

How did you become interested in mountain climbing? Any other outdoor activities?

I’ve immersed myself in extreme sports, accumulating 4,000 skydives and participating in two world records. Additionally, I pursued ski racing in college and now enjoy surfing on my off days, alongside my recent interest in mountaineering after a transformative trip to Everest Base Camp (EBC).

What does it feel like to reach a literal mountain top? How much training goes into it?

Following my EBC trek, I was invited to climb Lobuche (20,500ft) with experienced mountaineers, a pivotal experience that ignited my pursuit of summiting 8,000-meter peaks, including Mount Everest.

However, the financial and logistical challenges associated with this endeavor are significant. To mitigate costs and prove my capabilities, I opted to undertake the challenging Ama Dablam climb, which is a demanding month and a half journey.

After climbing several practice-training peaks and spending about a month in the area, we were prepared for the ascent. This endeavor proved to be the most mentally and physically demanding experience of my life.

Frequently, I’m asked why I pursue climbing these perilous peaks, where a single misstep can prove fatal. In response, George Mallory’poker hand rankingss words, “if you have to ask, you’ll never know,” resonate deeply. The endeavor isn’t about enjoyment, but rather the profound personal growth and triumph over challenges experienced upon reaching the summit. The breathtaking vistas make the risks worthwhile.

How can you apply any life lessons from climbing to flying jets?

The lessons learned from these experiences parallel those crucial to flying, like emphasizing the importance of perseverance and maintaining composure, especially in the most demanding circumstances.

calvin lee poker_Best Recommended_ski racing in college /2023/12/12/regional-service-and-beyond/ /2023/12/12/regional-service-and-beyond/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2023 16:35:39 +0000 /?p=19876 What do Envoy, NASA, and SpaceX have in common? A lot more than you’d think.

Over the last year, Envoy has partnered with the FAA, NASA, SpaceX and other Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex based airlines on two separate initiatives to improve air travel efficiency and sustainability, both of which had successful outcomes.

Representing Envoy, Dispatch Technical and Systems Development Manager, Ken Vogt, took a moment to share with us an overview of these partnerships and recap of what we achieved together.

Testing NASA’s ATD-2

In a significant breakthrough for the aviation industry, NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) system has emerged as a game changer, enhancing the efficiency of surface flight operations at some of the busiest airports. This innovative system focuses on time-based metering of departures, aiming to reduce long departure queues, conserve fuel, cut emissions, and optimize the use of limited airport runways and taxiways. But how did it come to be?

Envoy, alongside other DFW metroplex based airlines, participated in the testing and evaluation of the ATD-2 System. Through testing this new system, Envoy alone saved up to 1,430 pounds of fuel, leading to a reduction of 3,500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. To put this into perspective, it’s equivalent to planting 42 urban trees and helped us to avoid more than 132 hours of passenger flight delays!

The cumulative efforts across ATD-2 partners resulted in astonishing figures: 1,101,768 gallons of fuel saved, a reduction of 23,211,172 pounds of CO2 emissions, and substantial time and cost savings for the airlines overall.

“Envoy’s involvement in the ATD-2 testing was not a random occurrence – NASA selected Envoy based on prior engagements with the FAA RAIM FAR Working Group,” shared Ken. “This group played a crucial role in formulating Federal Regulations on Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring, assessing the integrity of GPS signals for aircraft navigation.”

Envoy 🤝 SpaceX

The success story doesn’t end with ATD-2; Envoy and SpaceX also recently joined forces in an Information Sharing Symposium. This event focused on sharing best practices, with SpaceX seeking Envoy’s expertise in establishing and refining Mission Control Protocols for its Revenue Flight Operations.

Collaboration is key

As one of the world’s largest regional airlines and an important part of American Airlines Group (AAG), Envoy is committed to supporting the aerospace industry as a whole.

From NASA to SpaceX and beyond, partnerships such as these enable us to reduce our environmental impact, improve the customer experience, share and develop best practices and ensure that aviation continues to be an amazing industry for our colleagues and customers.

Thank you to Ken and the Envoy System Operations Control (SOC) team who are developing these partnerships, and to everyone who supplied information used in this article.

Way to go, team Envoy!

To celebrate this year Envoy invited lucky aviation enthusiasts to test their skills in our brand new full-motion flight simulators (SIMs) at Avenger Flight Group

After announcing the opportunity to win on our social media channels, contestants poured in and 24 lottery winners were selected to take part in this rare opportunity.

In late 2022, Envoy invested in two new Embraer 170/175 full-motion simulators (SIMs) to support our growing group of pilots with training and qualifications. These state-of-the-art SIMs, housed at the Avenger Flight Group (AFG) facility in Irving, Texas, are the very SIMs our contest winners got to fly.

“Envoy continues to invest significantly in resources and infrastructure needed to support our Embraer E-Jet fleet, and deliver outstanding service to American’s customers,” said Envoy Senior Vice President of Air Operations Dee Temples. “And what better way to commemorate National Aviation Day than to celebrate that investment with the most enthusiastic av-geeks in the community.”

When they weren’t in the simulated flight deck, contest winners were touring the AFG facility, getting advice from Envoy pilots, networking with industry leaders and dodging the Texas heat with some snow cones.

“I’m so thankful for this opportunity – Seeing the training facility helped boost my motivation to accomplish my dreams and goals in aviation,” shared participant and aspiring aviator, Roy Moya. “I look forward to what the future holds, and hopefully, the next time I go to that facility will be as a student!” Thanks to all who celebrated all things aviation with us last week. And thank you to Avenger Flight Group for partnering with us to make this National Aviation Day a memorable one!

It’s National Camera Day and to celebrate, we’re sharing a special interview with photographer and Envoy DFW Fleet Service Clerk Darshan Patel. You may have seen his work on Instagram under the handle @darshan.p.photography, where he shares a mix of plane spotting, landscapes, portraits, and more. Darshan shares his experience at Envoy, as well as some tips for aspiring Fleet Service Clerks and photogs alike.

What piqued your interest to work in aviation?

When I was young, my dad flew a Cessna 172 and I would read over his pilot manual that came with the aircraft. This is what sparked my love for aviation and I still have that manual to this day.

It was my dad’s suggestion to look into employment with Envoy and, after researching the company, I realized it was a great opportunity.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities as a Fleet Service Clerk?

My shifts begin with familiarizing myself with the flight schedules. Then, I’m working and completing a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) walk.

Ensuring safety is the most important thing on the job, and removing potentially harmful debris from the ramp can help mitigate potential damage to people and/or aircraft. I also ensure that my gate is set up and do a safety huddle with my crew prior to aircraft arrival to ensure safety and efficiency.

My role varies from marshaling in the aircraft, wing walking, offloading and loading bags, cleaning the cabin of the aircraft, and pushing back the aircraft safely for departure.

What is your favorite part about the job?

My favorite thing to do is wing walk for departing aircraft, because you get to see people, mostly kids, waving at you. I can see how excited they are when I wave back and it makes me feel good to know that I was a positive part of their travel experience.

Pushing aircrafts for departure is also really cool!

Let’s talk #NationalCameraDay, how did you get your start in photography?

My cousin was a photographer for the 49ers football team, and a real estate photographer. He got me interested in photography, which led me to purchase my first Nikon Coolpix L330.

I soon upgraded to a Canon Rebel EOS T7. In 2016, I slowly started to develop my photography business and in 2018, I got my very first client – she loved her portraits and became a regular client!

I eventually decided to really invest in my photography business and got professional lighting for outdoor sessions. Today, I am humbled to not only have a business partner that’s a videographer but also poker online freework with high-tech equipment.

What is your camera of choice?

I use a Canon M50 and a Sony A7 IV. Soon, I will be replacing my Canon M50 for a new Canon EOS R100, which I am very excited about!

What type of aircraft do you like to shoot with your camera? Where’s your favorite place to plane spot?

My favorite aircraft to shoot is the E175 (of course), as well as American 777-300, 787, 737, A321NEO, British Airways A380, and as well as any surprising aircraft. My all-time favorite location for plane spotting is the Founders Plaza location north of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport.

What photography tips and tricks can you share?

Grab a camera and your best telephoto lens. FlightAware is the best app to know when, where and what aircraft are coming to any destination.

Give yourself enough time and find a good composition, so that you can get a beautiful shot of a particular aircraft.

For Envoy First Officer Tomas Monterrosa, it was the influence of his two uncles, Robert Monterrosa, a commercial pilot, and the other, Carlos Monterrosa, a Captain at Avianca, that ignited his passion for aviation. Little did he know that the path to becoming a pilot would take an unexpected detour through a career as a Ramp Agent at Envoy.

The pursuit of passion

Tomas enrolled in Envoy partner school, ATP, to pursue his passion of flight in 2017 and, once he earned his Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) qualification, he worked as a flight instructor at another Envoy partner school, the University of North Dakota, to work towards the FAA-mandated 1,500 flight hour minimums  necessary to start his career as a commercial airline pilot.

Sometimes, flights get diverted and that’s what happened to Tomas. As he neared his minimums, the unexpected happened with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many others, Tomas found himself facing uncertainty and began to reconsider his passion for flight.

When life hands you lemons, pivot.

In April 2021, Tomas joined Envoy as a Ramp Agent at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to remain within the realm of aviation. As he went through the training program, his dedication and enthusiasm caught the attention of his supervisor, who recommended that he apply for a Ramp Specialist Position. Heeding their advice, Tomas underwent the interview process and was offered the position on the spot in May 2021.

“This opportunity opened new doors for me and allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the operations that take place below the wing,” shared Tomas.

While working as a Ramp Specialist, Tomas quickly realized that his passion for flight had not diminished. In September of that year, he applied for a position as a Pilot Recruiter, a role that provided him the opportunity to engage with other aspiring pilots. While being part of the recruitment process was fulfilling, it only made him want to be on the other side of the process that much more.

Never give in, never give up

Despite the challenges faced, Tomas’s unwavering love for aviation persisted and, in March 2023, his dream took flight as he joined Envoy as a First Officer.

“Today, as I reflect on my journey, I can’t help but appreciate the valuable experiences and opportunities that have shaped my aviation career,” shared Tomas. “I am grateful for the opportunities that Envoy has provided me and look forward to continuing my growth as a pilot.”

It’s National Camera Day and to celebrate, we’re sharing a special interview with plane spotter royalty who happens to also be an Envoy employee! Many may know her on Instagram as @StrawBMommy, but on the job at DFW Airport, Tracy Miller is known as a Fleet Service Clerk. The infamous DFW plane spotter shares an inside look at her day-to-day duties, what she enjoys most about the job, talks camera of choice, and her favorite ways to use her travel privileges.

What’s your Envoy story?

I’m a Fleet Service Clerk and I have worked at Envoy for six and a half years. I like the pace that I have here at Envoy, my seniority and I have a good rapport with my work colleagues. I’m comfortable where I’m at and I don’t want to leave!

What are some of your day-to-day responsibilities as a Fleet Service Clerk?

I work down on the ramp offloading bags and collecting some of the suitcases off of inbound flights and delivering them to their connecting flights. So for example, say you are going through DFW Airport and connecting there to go to Nashville, I’ll be the one getting your bag and taking it to your connecting flight.

Any advice for someone interested in becoming a Fleet Service Clerk out on the ramp?

If you want to be a Fleet Service Clerk, you need to be prepared to work outside in all weathers. It can be challenging at times, but it’s still a lot of fun. And if you love to travel, then you need to do it.

What piqued your interest to work for the airline industry?

I actually met somebody who worked for Air France on vacation in Turkey one year, and he told me about the flight benefits and how he traveled the world for next to nothing and it just really got me interested so, I was like, that’s the job for me!

Once you learned about what the aviation industry had to offer, how did you get your start in it?

I’m originally from London, England and I started in aviation in the early 1990s on the ramp at London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR). I was a Crew Chief there and that’s how I got the bug. I then took a break to have a family, moved here to the United States and got back into aviation in 2013. I worked at the ticket counter for American Airlines for a while, but then decided to come down to the ramp. I felt it was a better option for me because I just love being outside with the planes.

What made you want to work at Envoy?

A friend of mine was a Fleet Service Clerk at Envoy and I would see him everyday when I was at the ticket counter and he would always tell me how good it was and how much fun it was, so I decided to make the move and I was hooked. I was back outside with the planes, which is what I love. I love the whole ambience of the airport life in general, but being outside with the planes, that’s where it’s at!

Where do you love to travel to when you use your flight benefits?

I have family back in England, so obviously flying back to England is awesome and getting to sit in First Class is amazing. I’ve also been to Medellin, Colombia — I love Medellin! And I like to do little day trips here and there, you know, like fly to Miami and have lunch and fly back. Go to Nashville, do a couple of museums, have lunch, fly back. Fly out to Los Angeles, do a little bit of plane spotting then fly back. There are a lot of benefits to be had from working for an airline.

Let’s talk #NationalCameraDay now, how did you get your start in plane spotting?

I’ve always been interested in airplanes since I was little, even from about eight years old I was taking pictures of planes. I used to have a little camera of my own and I would take pictures then give the film to my Mom to get developed and I would love to look at those pictures, so it’s been a big obsession of mine ever since.

What type of camera do you use?

I shoot with a Canon SX530 HS. It’s a very basic camera, it’s a hybrid and it gets the job done. It’s small and compact so it’s easy to carry around with me and it takes good pictures, so that’s all I need.

What photography tips and tricks can you share?

Well, I feel like I have a good artistic eye for pictures. You can have the best camera in the planning pokerworld, but if you don’t have the artistic eye, your pictures are never going to be good. And you can take really good pictures with your phone, I use my iPhone a lot and swap between that and my Canon. Whatever I happen to have with me at the time is what I use. I also like to get sunrise and sunset photos (during golden hour) for the best light. At DFW, you can get great sunset photos on the Eastside of the airport — if I can get a takeoff or landing on the Eastside of the airport, I’m a happy bunny because that’s the best lighting over there.

What type of aircraft do you like to shoot with your camera?

I like to get some of the Cargo 747s, because 747 is my thing. I like the Singapore Airlines 747s, Atlas Air is another favorite of mine so whenever they come in, I’ll try and get them. National and of course, the Antonov 124, whenever it came in. That’s always impressive to see. I just love being outside with the planes, that’s my passion.

Plane spotter, AVgeek or not, are you looking for a position out on the ramp? If so, DFW Airport is hiring Fleet Service Clerks! Click here and apply today.
